Opening the tailgate on your pickup truck can be hard on your back or hard on your truck - you get to choose. You can either let it drop and stress the cables, cable mounting pins, and the surrounding sheetmetal the pins are mounted in, or you can let it down easy yourself and take the weight of the tailgate on your arm(s) and back. Tailgates are not light. The 3rd generation Dodge tailgate weighs 45 lbs., Chevy tailgates weigh 35 and the Ford F-150 gate weighs 25 lbs.
The EZ Down is not a cheap gas shock. It has been tested to 1,000,000 cycles, will damp 400% of the weight of the tailgate, and has a 1 year warranty.
This accessory was invented after a tragic accident where a man thought his gate was closed, and while he adjusted a trailer hitch, the gate fell on his head which was between the tongue of the trailer and the falling tailgate. He died the next day of his injuries.
If you have children, this could save them a painful bump in the head as you get ready to load up the truck and open the gate with your arms full and they appear as the gate falls.
